A Bit of History

St. Paul Church is affiliated with the United Church of Christ, a denomination created by the merger of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches in 1957. The United Church of Christ has nearly 2 million members in over 6,000 congregations throughout the United States.

You may already be familiar with the United Church of Christ through some of its institutions: Deaconess Hospital, the Evangelical Children’s Home, the Emmaus Home, Eden Seminary, Drury College, and others.

Our local church was organized in 1859 by a group of German Protestants. Today, St. Paul United Church of Christ continues the traditions of those who have served here before us, but we also keep interpreting our faith in new and dynamic ways. We helped to establish the Old Monroe Senior Housing, and we continue to provide a food pantry and emergency funding for those in need and serve and deliver meals at WINCO.

Perhaps, above all else, St. Paul is a welcoming church—open to the Spirit of its Lord, open to receive and share God’s love, open for you.
